ART / ROSANNE BARR

Rosanne Barr was born in 1981 in the village of Gartocharn at the south end of Loch Lomond. She experienced the natural beauty of the countryside from an early age, finding inspiration in the far north of Scotland at Balnakiel in Sutherland, Arisaig and Altbea, Ross & Cromarty.
She was awarded Silver and Gold medals in successive years in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Galleries Drawing Competition and subsequently exhibited at the Smith Galleries in Stirling. In 2003 she graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee with First Class Honours. Later that year she exhibited in London at the British Design Centre and at The Mall Galleries where she was awarded a Licentiate of Distinction by the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
Rosanne began work on abstract landscape painting in 2005. Her work featured at the Lillie Art Gallery, Milngavie, The Green Gallery, Aberfoyle and a solo show, entitled Lands of Escape at The Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. In March 2007, on a world excursion, she experienced the evocative sights of Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. On her return to Scotland she left employment with Perth Education Authority to concentrate full-time on an artistic career.
She has received invitations to many galleries in Scotland. Her most recent work has been selected for the Annual Exhibitions of the Royal Glasgow Institute of The Fine Arts and Paisley Art Institute.
In March 2008 her first major solo show Lands of Home and Venture at The Green Gallery was a sell-out: “bold brushed landscapes, deftly mixing realism, impressionism, and a dash of the Colourists. Always inspired by Scotland’s landscapes”. [The Herald 8.03.08]

Our fondest memories are often those of 'escaping' - of getting away from it all if only for a while. This escape is serene, moving, and is usually characterised by a certain place personal to each of us. My paintings are entitled "Lands of Escape", I aim to capture mood, emotion, movement and atmosphere in my work, These Lands of Escape are not the places themselves - they are how we remember them. Travelling the remote northern coastlines of Scotland influences my painting and more recently the panoramic, rugged lands of Orkney.
I paint instinctively, inspired by shifting skies or a distant light or colour on the horizon. I paint with large brushes, swiftly, creating a sense of movement in each painting. I apply the paint directly onto the canvas, to keep the paint looking fresh and the colours vivid and I often build up layers to create interesting textures and depth. With Scotland as my inspiration I can never grow tired of the desire to paint.
The past year has been marked by exhibitions in Aberdeen , Oxford and Glasgow and two solo shows in Edinburgh and Dunkeld . The 2009 Barclays TSB Jolomo Foundation brought wider attention, as Rosanne was short-listed for the final exhibition from an entry of eighty. While the Competition brings with it the certainty of a future exhibition in London , independently, she has already received invitations to appear with leading galleries at the Glasgow , Edinburgh and London Art Fairs in the autumn.
Rosanne's second major solo show for Rebecca Walker at The Green Gallery in Buchlyvie, opens in September. In recent months she has been fortunate enough to visit the Orkney Isles, where family now have a second home. Viewing the midsummer clouds across the sea has inspired the exhibition title - “Skyscapes” .
Rosanne continues to work in both acrylic and oil at her studio, in Loch Lomondside, Gartocharn.
